OK, it's an ashtray. A big Mary Alice Hadley Ashtray. You could park big Cuban cigars in it. Or, you could use it to hold trinkets. OR, let's think out of the box here... how about a yarn bowl? Keep the yarn for your current project. And look at those indentations! Your knitting needles or crochet hooks will sit so nicely in them!
Note... no, you may not have my yarn, my needles, or my handy bamboo tray. If I had a flat surface somewhere, I'd use it as a yarn bowl.
