The Heilbronn Infantry Regiment was set up in Wehrkreis Vwhen the Reichswehr was expanded into the Wehrmacht. The regimental staff ofthe regiment was set up in Heilbronn am Neckar, in Wehrkreis. When the unitswere displayed in 1935, the regiment was renamed Infantry Regiment 34, andbecame part of Infantry Division 35.
From May 10, 1940, the division took part in the westerncampaign, breaking through the Dutch and Belgian border fortifications north ofthe Eben Emael fortress. After the end of the French campaign, the division wasrelocated to Belgium, and used for Channel Coast protection. The division alsoprepared to land in England. Later the division was relocated to East Prussiaand took part in the Russian campaign on June 22, 1941.
They fought in the Smolensk area, suffered heavy lossesnear Duchowtschina, and began the advance on Moscow to the Moskva-Volga Canal.There to meet the Russian winter offensive.
The division later withdrew to West Prussia area passing throughDanzig. Part of the division was brought by ship to the Hela peninsula and capitulatedthere at the wars end. Others evacuated to Schleswig-Holstein, and the rest weretaken prisoner near Danzig.
