Antique plasma intaglio of the 2nd / 3rd centuries Century AD in a modern ring

Roman intaglios in transparent, green stones are far rarer than those in orange-colored carnelian or opaque jasper. The stone we see here is translucent green. In gem research, the term “plasma” has established itself for this material, after a term for corresponding green gems that was already in use in antiquity. The idea behind this word is that the stone is the bedrock of the emeralds, the literal stone that forms the emerald (gr. πλάσμα, the educated). The center of this ring is such an intaglio in plasma, a standing man is shown. He seems to be dancing, at first glance, but the second one shows that he is holding a bow and arrow in his hand. Is it a hunter depicted here? A god, such as Apollo, or the messenger of love Cupid? It is not absolutely clear - and so the ring offers several possibilities to understand it: As a piece of jewelry that helps to hunt - or to achieve victories! The present intaglio of the 2nd Or 3. AD found us from a Cologne collection. The stone is set in a simple gold frame that was created around 1800; at that time the gem was part of a larger piece of jewelry. Our goldsmith has forged a ring band made of high-quality gold for the classicist version, so that the Roman seal stone can be worn as a ring again. So the antique gem can be a stylish companion.
