Sentimental memorial ring made of gold and hair, around 1880
    description
In the 19th In the 19th century, jewelry with hair inlays was popular in many parts of Europe, but especially in England. Because the hair is a physical component of the human being, which survives and can also remind of a loved one over time and distance - and this materially, not only ideally. Jewelry with hair was therefore not only mourning jewelry, but also an expression of friendship or even love. The present ring consists of a golden band on which a fine braid of artfully braided brown hair rests under two clasps. Braiding hair for pieces of jewelery, or making artistic objects out of it, was an art of its own in those years: How far this had progressed is shown by the fact that the present ring has survived in such beautiful condition to this day. The ring shows a curved cartridge field in its center to accommodate an engraving. Under what circumstances the ring was once given away can only be speculated. Presumably, however, it was a friendship or love gift: Because I don't like engraving a date of death, as we often find it in funeral jewelry. Rather, it was probably once an expression of a deep bond between two people who thought of each other tenderly.
